UFC 146 will feature a host of crucial heavyweight fights, as it was announced today that, in addition to the heavyweight title fight in the main event, Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez will do battle on the card, as will Roy “Big Country” Nelson and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
Former UFC heavyweight champions in their own right, Frank Mir (16-5) and Cain Velasquez (9-1) will be fighting at UFC 146 to determine the next number one contender to the heavyweight throne. Since losing to Shane Carwin in a number one contender’s matchup in 2010, Mir has beaten Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Roy Nelson and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, to position himself in another. Velasquez will be coming off of the first fight in his professional career, having been knocked out in the first round of his November, UFC on FOX 1 bout against Junior dos Santos to relinquish his heavyweight belt.
Talented big men Roy “Big Country” Nelson (16-7) and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (16-3) will both be looking to rebound from recent losses when they meet on the card, as Nelson recently dropped a one-sided decision to Fabricio Werdum and Bigfoot was beaten by Daniel Cormier. Silva will be making his UFC debut in facing Nelson, who’ll be appearing inside the Octagon for the seventh time.
UFC 146 is set to take place on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and will feature a championship battle between current top dog Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.
