UFC on FX 2: Alves vs. Kampmann went down tonight from the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia tonight and featured a welterweight main event between Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann. As always, the UFC handed out bonuses for the superlative performances of the night, this evening in the amount of $50,000 each.
Fight of the Night was awarded to flyweight tournament participants Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall, who battled to what was originally reported as a majority decision, but, due to an error made by the athletic commission overseeing the event, was actually a majority draw. The fight should have gone to a sudden death round per tournament rules and will now reportedly stage a rematch of their exciting scrap this April.
Debuting flyweight Joseph Benavidez was awarded Knockout of the Night for his second-round starching of Yasuhiro Urushitani on the other side of the 125lbs tournament bracket. Benavidez looked no worse for the wear from his weight cut down from 135 and will await the winner of Johnson-McCall 2 to dispute the vacant flyweight belt.
Main event fighter Martin Kampmann took home Submission of the Night after tapping Thiago Alves in the last round to rally from a considerable deficit. Alves held a clear edge as the fight wound to a close and had Kampmann hurt down the stretch with a flurry; rather than keep the pressure up standing, Alves dove for the takedown and allowed Kampmann to snatch up the fight-ending guillotine.
