UFC 144: Takanori Gomi Vs. Eiji Mitsuoka

Round 1: No glove touch from these two. Mitsuoka lands the first shot with a right hand. He gets in another in the form of an uppercut. Mitsuoka finding a home for his right Gomi is getting touched by Mitsuoka’s strikes for leading with his head. Mitsuoka goes in for the takedown and Gomi lands three solid knees to the gut before they break. Mitsuoka cracks him with another right hook. Gomi defends a takedown. Gomi overextends on a hook and gets tagged for it. Gomi with a hard kick to the ribs. Mitsuoka with an uppercut. Mitsuoka finds a home for two solid lefts. Gomi right in there, firing back with a body kick. Gomi comes in with a bolo punch and gets dropped by a short right straight from Mitsuoka. Mitsuoka follows him down, they scramble and he takes Gomi’s back. Mitsuoka working for the inverted triangle, it’s tight but Gomi survives to the end, looking like he doesn’t know where he is as he staggers to his feet.

Round 2: Gomi with a hard kick to the body. Gomi is coming at Mitsuoka aggressive, but Mitsuoka is tagging him with counters. Mitsuoka is getting overwhelmed by Gomi’s pressure now, hot on his heels to make space. Mitsuoka shoots for the takedown, but Gomi defends and goes back on the attack. Mitsuoka is withering and Gomi is wading through his shots to land hard knees to the body and punches to the head. Gomi sprawls on another takedown and goes to work on Mitsuoka’s body with punches. Gomi spins out and takes a turtled Mitsuoka’s back. Gomi pounds away at Mitsuoka until referee Leon Roberts has seen enough and calls a halt. What a comeback by The Fireball Kid.
