With Derek Brunson’s failed eye exam behind them, Strikeforce has moved forward in finding a replacement to face Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Super Cage Combat middleweight champion Bristol Marunde will now make his Strikeforce debut against Souza.
Marunde-Souza will take place March 3 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, as part of the Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey card. The bout will be featured on the Showtime-televised main card, which boasts a main event of Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey for Tate’s title.
Marunde (15-6) has competed for both IFL and M-1 in the past. He has claimed nine victories in his last 10 fights, including a decision win over Jay Silva.
Souza (14-3) is 4-1 in Strikeforce and is looking to get back in the title hunt after dropping the belt to Luke Rockhold last year. Souza’s original opponent, Brunson, was not cleared to compete by the Ohio Athletic Commission due to an issue with his vision should he lose a contact during the fight.
