Jake Ellenberger Survives Late Surge From Sanchez To Take Decision Win

Jake Ellenberger tangled with the wildfire Diego Sanchez tonight in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 1, experiencing firsthand Sanchez’s trademark tenacity, but overcoming it in the end to take home a unanimous decision victory.

Ellenberger handled Sanchez throughout the first two rounds of their welterweight tilt, avoiding Sanchez’s punches and attempts to brawl with slick footwork and head movement, making him pay all the while for his aggressiveness with stinging counter shots and well-timed takedowns.

Ellenberger showed high-level striking, timing Sanchez well on his entries and rocking the notoriously-durable Greg Jackson product on more than one occasion. Sanchez’s mammoth display of heart in continuing to press forward in the face of a beating was nothing new, but Ellenberger got to display his own grit when The Dream turned the tide late in the third.

Sanchez stung Ellenberger with his own hard shots standing and eventually took his back on the ground, where he rained down blows and threatened with the rear naked choke for what must have been a harrowing stretch of moments for The Juggernaut. Ellenberger hung tough against Sanchez’s onslaught, escaping to his feet with seconds left in the round to plant his feet and engage until the bell.

This was a main event that had many begging for two extra rounds, as the added time would have no doubt seen more blistering excitement from these two elite welterweights. Ellenberger improves to 27-5 (6-1 in the UFC) and is now riding a six-fight winning streak. Sanchez falls to 23-5 (12-5 in the UFC) and sees a two-fight streak ended.
