The UFC has announced a pair of high profile match ups in the lighter weight classes today, with Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber getting a date for their title fight rubber match and featherweight contenders Chan Sung Jung and Dustin Poirier squaring off in a bout that’s been talked about for some time.
UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz (19-1) and former featherweight kingpin Urijah Faber (26-5) will do battle for the third time in their careers on July 7 in the main event of UFC 148. The two have split the outcomes of their first two meetings, with Faber submitting Cruz in the first frame of their first meeting, a featherweight title fight, and Cruz taking a narrow decision the second time around to defend his bantamweight strap. Since their last fight, at UFC 132 last summer, Faber has tapped out Brian Bowles and Cruz has defeated Demetrious Johnson by decision.
UFC 148 is expected to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
A match up between surging featherweights Dustin Poirier (12-1) and Chan Sung Jung (12-3) — better known as The Korean Zombie — has been bandied about for some time and now it’s finally coming to fruition, with the two set to headline UFC on Fuel TV 3 this May. Undefeated in four UFC appearances, 23-year-old Dustin Poirier has finished his last two opponents with impressive submissions, showing skill and fighting instinct that belie his age. Jung is also undefeated since transitioning from the WEC to the UFC, having earned a spectacular Twister submission win over Leonard Garcia and flash knockout over Mark Hominick.
UFC on Fuel TV 3 will go down on May 15 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia.
