Putting an end to the day’s madcap speculation, the Nevada State Athletic Commission has officially revealed that Nick Diaz has returned another positive test for marijuana (via USAToday).
Diaz was tested for his UFC 143 main event bout against Carlos Condit, which went down last Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rumors circulated throughout the day that Diaz had tested positive and only gained speed when NSAC executive director Keith Kizer revealed that someone who appeared on the card had failed their drug screening.
Sure enough, Diaz handed in a sample that contained marijuana metabolites and he now awaits disciplinary action from the NSAC.
Diaz tested positive in Nevada before, when he met Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 in 2007, forcing what was originally a submission (gogoplata) win to be overturned and ruled a no contest. He was suspended for six months then, but may be facing a stiffer penalty this time around as a repeat offender.
Diaz and Condit battled back and forth closely for five rounds last weekend, producing one of the most hotly contested decision endings in recent memory. It looked as though the UFC were working toward putting together a rematch, but that possibility now seems unlikely.
