If the UFC has its way, BJ Penn will return to the Octagon sometime in 2012 and compete in his native Hawaii. However, even if “The Prodigy” does not return to fighting, the UFC is still planning holding an event in the islands this year.
In a recent interview with MMAWeekly.com, UFC president Dana White talked about taking a trip to Hawaii and hosting a card inside Aloha Stadium. The site, which is the annual host for the NFL’s Pro Bowl, in an outdoor arena that seats 50,000.
“We’re still working on that, but we want to do it. I was kind of hoping to go to Hawaii again and do a BJ fight at the Aloha Bowl, but BJ wants to take some time off. He’s going to relax for a while,” White said. “We’re coming regardless (of having Penn or not). But that was the fight I really wanted to do there.”
Penn announced his retirement following a loss to Nick Diaz last year. There have been rumblings of the former UFC champion returning to competition, but nothing has been confirmed.
