UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit went down tonight from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and, as always, the superlative fighters of the evening were awarded fight night bonuses, this evening in the amount of $65,000.
Heavyweight battlers Fabricio Werdum and Roy Nelson, who met in the co-main event of the evening, were awarded the Fight of the Night bonus for their three round scrap, which saw Werdum display much-improved striking en route to scoring a unanimous decision over Big Country. The win was a big one for Werdum, who returned to the UFC tonight after a four-fight stint in Strikeforce.
Debuting UFC fighter Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson made it an impressive debut in the Octagon tonight, methodically shutting down Dan Stittgen with his karate-based attack before dropping him like a sack of bricks with a very slick head kick he hid behind a pair of punches. The 28-year-old stays undefeated in victory and presents an interesting new player in the welterweight division.
Finally, surging featherweight Dustin Poirier repelled game Octagon debutant Max Holloway, earning the Submission of the Night bonus in the process. Poirier weathered some early pressure from Holloway to put him on the mat and lock up a mounted triangle/armbar, coaxing the tap in the first round to extend his winning streak to five straight.
