UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit went down tonight from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and saw Carlos Condit crowned the UFC interim welterweight champion.
Announced by UFC president Dana White at the post-fight presser, the event pulled in an audience of 10,000 for a gate of $2.3 million.
In the main event of the night, Carlos Condit edged Nick Diaz in a very close — some are calling controversial — split decision, taking scores of 48-47, 49-46, 49-46 over the Stockton native. The story of the fight was Condit’s movement, as The Natural Born Killer stayed constantly in motion to prevent Diaz from cutting him off and firing off with his voluminous punching attack, scoring with his own shots as he circled away.
In victory, Condit wins the interim 170lbs. title and a chance to face Georges St-Pierre upon his return, should he hold onto the belt if he attempts to make any title defense. Nick Diaz announced his retirement following the bout.
In the co-main event, returning heavyweight Fabricio Werdum put a three round beating on Roy Nelson, showing the best striking he ever has in battering Big Country to a unanimous decision victory.
