UFC 143: Nick Diaz Vs. Carlos Condit

Condit walking out looking as mean and focused as ever to “The Ghost of Tom Joad” by Rage Against the Machine. Diaz goes with the Deftones’ “Feiticeira,” also looking ready to do violence. Both fighters staring each other down from across the cage, pacing and not breaking eye contact. Referee Steve Mazzagatti will be the third man in the cage for this interim welterweight title fight. It’s an intense meeting in the center of the cage, both men ready for battle.

Round 1: No glove touch here. Condit getting off with a leg kick and taking the outside of the cage. Another leg kick for Condit. One to the inside. Diaz with a right hand. Another left leg kick for Condit. Diaz denied on a takedown. Another leg kick for Condit. Diaz trying to cut Condit off against the cage, getting in some stiff right jabs. Condit scoring with leg kicks. Condit briefly pinned to the fence, but he braks free. Diaz keeping Condit moving away on the outside. Condit misses barely on a head kick. Diaz fires off one of his own. A one-two lands for Diaz. Diaz with a leg kick. They trade head kicks that are blocked. Leg kick for Condit. Another. Diaz with the cut kick. Condit misses a spinning back kick; Diaz drops his hands and starts talking, walking after Condit with his hands down. Diaz taunting, both men talking trash. Condit misses a spinning back elbow and Diaz presses him into the fence, alnding a hard right. Diaz goes hard to the body and Condit with a hard leg kick. Diaz putting his hand son Condit now, trapping him against the fence for long enough to get off combos before Condit circles out. Chants of “Diaz!” break out. Condit lands a pair of kicks and Diaz crosses his arms, egging him on.

Round 2: Condit tries a head kick. Another, and they both miss. Diaz walking him down again, keeping him on his heels. He dodges a flying knee and threatens the takedown. Diaz tags Condit against the cage with a right hand. Condit looking slightly less committed and lethal than usual, though he lands a good spinning back elbow. Diaz presses him into cage momentarily, but Condit breaks free. Diaz egging Condit on, hands at his sides before landing a one-two. Condit talking back, but looking a little frazzled that Diaz is walking through his leg kicks to land solid punches. Diaz pumping th jab, keeping Condit on the move. Good leg kick for Condit. Body kick for Condit. Diaz corners him and goes hard to the head and body. They trade right hands. Condit on his heels, but attacking well until Diaz cuts him off, to land hard punch combinations. Condit goes hard to the body and Diaz taunts him. Diaz pins Condit and fires off a volley of hard punches to the body. Condit tries to return with knees, but Diaz defends. Another leg kick for Condit. Diaz tries occasionally to grab hold of Condit, but Condit keeps shaking him off. Tense moment after the bell where Diaz walks after Condit.

Round 3: They both attempt kicks that miss. Condit gets in an inside leg kic. Diaz goes to the head and body well; Condit returns with with a body shot and spins off the cage. Condit attacking well while moving on his back foot, keeping Diaz from peppering him with too many shots on the cage like he does to most. Both men keeping up constant offensive output. It’s close; Diaz walking Condit down and landing punches whenever he can cut Condit off, and Condit doing well to land with his back to the cage and get out before Diaz can land too much. Diaz is dictating the pace and pressuring, but Condit is landing more shots with his constant kicks to the legs and body. Condit with a mean leg kick. Diaz talking to Condit, but Condit is loosening up and putting his shots together on Diaz, landing hard punches and kicks. Diaz walking right through it, tagging Condit with a pair of hard punches. Condit with an elbow and Diaz with several punches. Condit with a side kick to the gut. Condit slips on a kick, but he gets right back to his feet.

Round 4: Condit starts in with the kicks immediately, landing three to the legs within the first thirty seconds. Diaz trying hard to pin Condit on the fence to go to work, but Condit is doing very well in staying off the fence and attacking as he moves away. Condit with a one-two. Diaz with a good punch combo that Condit answers with a front kick. Diaz grabs onto Condit and drops for the takedown, but Condit defends and lands a combo on the break. Outside leg kick for Condit and The Natural Born Killer is taking this decision. Diaz isn’t getting hurt, but Condit is landing the overwhelming majority of the shots. Condit with a nice left hand as Diaz stalks after him. A head kick lands for Condit after a pair of punches. Condit’s constant movement at angles is keeping Diaz from putting his usual overwhelming assault together. This round is all Condit, with Diaz barely able to get any offense together.

Round 5: Diaz with a pair of body kicks. Condit answers with a one-two and two kicks to the leg. Diaz working more kicks this round, to solid effect. Diaz with a more varied attack this round, but Condit still working the outside and keeping clear of most of the offense from Diaz. Solid leg kick for Condit and a hard combination of punches. Diaz initiates the clinch, but Condit shakes him off, having none of it. Two minutes to go and this is still all Condit. Diaz cannot figure out his movement, but he lands a hard one-two against the cage. Condit returns fire with a good knee and gets off his own stiff one-two in the middle of the cage. Diaz comes back after him. Diaz spins behind Condit and takes his back, dragging him to the ground and working for a submission with a minute left. Diaz with the body triangle and working for the rear naked choke. Thirty seconds to go; Condit fights out of the choke but Diaz is still on his back. Ten seconds to go and Diaz rolls for the armbar. Condit rolls out and takes top position. Diaz immediately gives Condit a hug and helps him to his feet.

Carlos Condit defeated Nick Diaz via unanimous decision (48-47, 49-46, 49-46)

Condit gives props to Diaz, calls him a warrior and says he has nothing but admiration and respect for him and how he fights. Crowd shot of GSP shows him looking clearly disappointed. Condit say he’s always looked up to GSP and is looking forward to fighting him. Says he’s honored to share the stage with fighters like Diaz and St-Pierre.

Diaz won’t accept this as a loss. Gives props to Condit, calls him the man, but says he doesn’t think that Condit could be considered the winner after backing up all night and landing “little baby leg kicks.” Says he’s had enough of this MMA sh**. Says he gets paid way too much, but not enough to continue to lose decisions he doesn’t agree with and announces his retirement.
