Carlos Condit didn’t get baited into Nick Diaz’ trash-talking, staying composed and securing the interim UFC welterweight title with a decision victory in the main event of UFC 143 Saturday night. Condit, who improved to 13-1 in his last 14 fights, landed 146 strikes to 110 by Diaz.
“I gotta tell you, it’s pretty surreal,” Condit said. “I want to thank my coaches and my teammates because they prepared me. I did what they told me to do and I walked away with a victory.”
“The Natural Born Killer” avoided Diaz pushing him up against the Octagon to explode with his typical “bunches-in-punches” style, relying on his speed and quickness to land several big leg kicks that hurt Diaz.
“(Late in the fight) I started to find my flow,” Condit said. “Hats off to Nick Diaz. He’s a warrior.”
Now, Condit will either wait for Georges St-Pierre to rehab from a knee injury to unify the welterweight titles, or possibly take another fight before GSP returns.
“It’s an honor (to be in this position),” Condit said. “Georges is a guy I looked up to since I was a young guy in this sport. It’s an honor to compete on this stage against guys like Nick Diaz, guys like Georges St-Pierre.”
