In his first UFC fight since a knockout loss to current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum picked up a unanimous decision victory over Roy Nelson Saturday night at UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit. The bout served as the co-main event for the evening.
Werdum nearly finished the fight early in the first round, taking the back of Nelson. “Big Country” was able to fend off the submission attempt of Werdum, but not the excellent display of striking that Werdum put on.
“I’ve been training my jiu-jitsu and I was surprised by how fast I got his back,” Werdum said. “But Roy Nelson is a black belt (and showed that).”
Werdum rebounded from a loss to Alistair Overeem in his last bout, as he dropped a decision to the current UFC No. 1 heavyweight contender. Nelson never stopped coming at Werdum, as Werdum said, “Roy Nelson is a big, tough guy. I can’t wait until my next fight.”
For Nelson, the loss was his third in his last four fights, but the former Ultimate Fighter winner displayed a more trimmed body and willingness to stand and trade for 15 minutes.
