UFC 143: Roy Nelson Vs. Fabricio Werdum

Round 1: They touch gloves and Werdum misses on an inside leg kick attempt. Werdum with a nice knee attempt. Werdum showing some solid striking in getting off a nice body kick. Werdum hits a cut kick as Nelson walks in, knocking him to the ground and immediately taking his back. Nelson frees himself and gets to his feet. Werdum is on him against the cage, landing some hard knees and dirty boxing. Werdum with the muay Thai plum, firing off hard knees. Nelson turns him into the fence. It appears as though Nelson is bleeding from his forehead, or the bridge of the knees. Werdum gets free and lands a mean knee from the clinch. Another. Werdum has clearly been working on his striking. Nelson leaning into Werdum on the clinch, bleeding heavily from his face. Referee Josh Rosenthal separates them and calls in the doctor to look at Nelson’s heavily damaged nose. Nelson says he’s fine and they get back to it in short order. Werdum with another hard knee, followed by a mean leg kick. Werdum’s striking looks tighter than ever here tonight. Nelson drops Werdum with a right hand and Werdum smiles, immediately attacking off his back. Nelson backs out and looks to land big shots from the top. Werdum stands and bases to his feet. Werdum comes after Nelson with straight punches, a knee and a body kick. He throws a wheel kick that misses before the bell.

Round 2: They touch gloves again, Nelson’s face heavily vaselined. Werdum times a fantastic knee that drops Nelson, but Big Country pops right back to his feet. Nelson with a hard leg kick. Werdum with an inside leg kick and outside leg kick in quick succession. As always, Nelson is hanging tough and coming right back at Werdum, but Werdum is nailing him repeatedly with hard knees to the gut. Another good leg kick lands for Werdum, he drops his hands and postures. A head kick for Werdum. Nelson staying in the pocket and trying to land punches, occasionally getting in some good shots, but Werdum is on point tonight. He nails Nelson with a three piece of straight punches, punctuated by a hard outside right leg kick. Werdum working set ups, trying to throw Nelson off of the level of his attack by looking down. Werdum with a body shot. One minute to go. Werdum goes hard to the body with a right kick; he lands a nice combo of punches ended by a nice knee. Nelson comes right back and staggers him with a right, but Werdum regains his wherewithal quickly and fires back with hard straight punches. Nelson with an overhand right before the bell.

Round 3: Nelson wading after Werdum; Werdum using a nice jab to keep him at bay. Werdum shoots for the takedown and Nelson slaps on a standing guillotine. Werdum defends, but abandons his takedown. Werdum with another nice punch combo ended with a good knee. Werdum stuns Nelson with a hard jab. Nelson cut over the right eye. Werdum pumping out the jab, then lands a front kick to the grill. Werdum with a right leg kick. Another. Werdum tries for and misses a head kick. Just over a minute left and Nelson is still plodding forward, eating hard counters and trying to do damage. Werdum hits the switch kick and puts hands on Nelson. Nelson returns fire with a pair of punches that cause Werdum to back up. Werdum with a hard straight right to the midsection.
