Former No. 1 contender Josh Koscheck didn’t have his most complete performance Saturday night, but “Kos” did enough to secure a split decision over Mike Pierce at UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit. Two judges scored the fight for Koscheck, 29-28, while the third gave it to Pierce by the same score.
The crowd in Las Vegas was full of complaints during the bout, booing the fighters for the majority of the contest. Koscheck, ever the “fan-friendly” fighter made sure those in attendance knew how he felt after his win.
“Right there,” said Koscheck, while displaying his middle finger for the camera. “You guys boo me all the time. I’m the most hated guy in MMA; deal with it, (because) I find a way to win.”
Koscheck landed three more strikes than Pierce, but the difference came in takedowns, as Koscheck scored two big double-legs that brought Pierce to his back. Pierce, also a former college wrestler like Koscheck, was successful just once on his takedown attempts.
“Mike Pierce is a tough guy and I knew that coming into this fight,” Koscheck said. “I had a great came and I’m looking forward…..”
Before Koscheck could finish, the crowd rained down more and more boos that made Koscheck laugh. This win, despite being by split decision, likely keeps Koscheck within striking distance of another possible fight for the UFC welterweight title.
