Nick Diaz’ manager, Cesar Gracie, said if Diaz was successful against Carlos Condit in claiming the interim UFC welterweight title, he would likely wait for Georges St-Pierre to return before fighting again. The manager of Condit, Malki Kawa, doesn’t think that situation would be best for his fighter.
Diaz and Condit collide tonight in the main event of UFC 143 from Las Vegas, Nevada. GSP is currently on the sidelines after knee surgery and is slated to return to action later this year.
In a radio interview with MMAjunkie.com, Kawa said he understands what Gracie is saying in waiting for St-Pierre to heal up, but for “The Natural Born Killer,” that plan might not work out for him.
“It depends on who the No. 1 contender is and what the fight does for us because to be honest with you, this is all about making money,” Kawa said. “If there’s another fight that makes sense stylistically, a guy staying busy – I’ve seen – is better than a guy who takes long breaks.”
Kawa added, “Say Carlos beats Nick and then wins another fight and then beats GSP, well, he’s fighter of the year. So if the right opponent steps up, I think we maybe need to take the fight.”
