With UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre on the sidelines with a knee injury, Nick Diaz will fight Carlos Condit this weekend in the main event of UFC 143 for the interim UFC welterweight title.
Rehabbing a torn right ACL, St-Pierre’s target for return isn’t exactly known, meaning that there may be time enough for the winner of Diaz-Condit to get in a title defense before St-Pierre can get back in the cage for a unification bout. Should that be the case and Diaz wins the title, the Stockton native’s manager, Cesar Gracie, today told MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that he’ll be pushing his charge to hang back and wait for the champ to recover before fighting again — at welterweight, anyway.
“This is probably gonna get me in trouble, but I’m gonna announce this right here on your show: we are not taking another fight,” Gracie told Helwani. “There’s only one way, in my mind, if we take another fight — and I don’t want to get ahead of myself because Nick hasn’t won the fight yet and that’s when you get in trouble… We don’t disrespect people like that, the only thing in our mind is Carlos Condit. But, you’re asking me a hypothetical. So, hypothetically, if we’re fortunate and we win this fight, I would advise Nick to not take another fight before the GSP fight, unless it was maybe at a different weight class, because we wanna wait for (the GSP fight).”
UFC 143: Diaz and Condit goes down this Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada; don’t forget to check back on FightLine for our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
