Johny Hendricks vaulted himself into the UFC welterweight title picture with his shocking knockout victory over Jon Fitch at UFC 141 last month. Now, Hendricks wants a chance to prove that victory wasn’t a fluke.
With Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit set to collide this Saturday night at UFC 143 for the interim UFC welterweight title, Hendricks would like nothing more than to face the winner. The former Oklahoma State University wrestling standout is 12-1 in his MMA career, including three straight wins.
“I’ve been telling everybody I really want the winner of (Diaz/Condit),” said Hendricks, in a recent interview with ESPN.com. “You don’t get this opportunity too often. Now that I’ve done it in the ring, I’ve got to do it outside the ring. If I don’t promote myself outside the ring – I mean, there are great fights going on and now they’re happening almost every week. You can be forgotten.”
Hendricks talked about Saturday night’s Josh Koscheck-Mike Pierce bout as one that could cause people to forget about his own performance. Also, welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez are slated to meet next month in another headliner bout.
“So if I don’t say in the news that I want that interim title shot, I might get bumped,” Hendricks said. “So I always got to be out there making my case. I want my goal. My goal is to be UFC champ, and I know I’m right there. I just need that shot.”
