Rafael Cordeiro is the coach of Fabricio Werdum, a fighter that will be making his return to the UFC this weekend at UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit. Werdum, who most recently competed in Strikeforce, meets Roy Nelson in a heavyweight showdown.
The 34-year-old Werdum is coming off a loss against Alistair Overeem that snapped a three-fight win streak. His last Octagon appearance came in 2008, as current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos scored a first round KO victory.
In Nelson, a winner of The Ultimate Fighter, Cordeiro believes his student will display the right kind of jiu-jitsu to ensure a victory. UFC 143 takes place Saturday night from Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Werdum will explore his strongest weapon, which is jiu-jitsu. People will realize how badly he wants to be in the UFC,” said Cordeiro, in a recent interview with Tatame.com. “He’s a tough opponent (Nelson), he has a whole history in there. He has fought many tough guys. The expectations are the best possible. Werdum is coming from tough fights, he’s used to it, so he’s training a lot in respect to Roy. He’s ready for a big fight.”
UFC 143 will feature a bout for the interim UFC welterweight title, as Nick Diaz meets Carlos Condit. Nelson-Werdum is one of the main event fights for the evening.
