Needing to secure his position in the UFC heavyweight division, Pat Barry came up with a huge first round knockout victory against Christian Morecraft at UFC on FX 1.
The quick win was good for Fight of the Night honors and brings HD’s record to 7-4.
“For me, the victory is just getting in the Octagon and overcoming my emotions,” commented Barry. “And I don’t worry about getting cut. I know I’m going to go in there and throw thunder at anyone.”
But it didn’t always look good for the former K-1 kickboxer. After facing two defeats in a row, Barry looked like he might drop a third when Morecraft locked in an arm bar early in the first round. Keeping his composure, Barry relied on superior positioning to defend the submission attempt and keep the fight standing. On his feet, Barry did what he does best—blasting Morecraft with a right hook that dropped him 3:38 into the bout.
“I knew to just stay calm. It’s not so bad. With more time and experience you learn that not every position is a horrible position,” said Barry.
The 242-pound heavyweight credits his victory to training with larger opponents, including the likes of Brock Lesnar, Cole Konrad and Jon Madsen. Whatever the case may be, Barry’s more well-rounded approach will serve him well as he continues his career in the Octagon.
