Riding a seven-fight winning streak into his bout against Benson Henderson, it looked like Jim Miller was just one fight away from finally earning the lightweight title shot everyone thought he deserved. Unfortunately for Miller, Henderson had no intentions of letting him coast into a title shot, defeating him via convincing unanimous decision in their November, UFC on Fox meeting.
Coming off of just the third loss in his career, Miller is looking to jump right back into the deep end, which he’ll be doing when he takes on the similarly-positioned Melvin Guillard at UFC on FX 1 this weekend.
“It’s the fight that I needed to get back where I was. Getting right back onto the road instead of taking a detour,” Miller told MMAWeekly recently. “That’s exactly what I wanted coming off of August. A top guy, a big name.”
Echoing similar sentiments to some recently expressed by Guillard, Miller not only respects his opponent, but counts himself amongst the Young Assassin’s fans.
“I’m a fan of the way he fights,” said Miller. “He’s cemented himself as a top 55?er and a very dangerous guy. He can connect and beat anybody in the division in the world, even at 170 I think, if he can fight his game plan.”
Miller and Guillard will meet this Saturday night in the main event of UFC on FX 1, which takes place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
