UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes went down tonight from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and featured a blisteringly exciting night of fights. As always, the superlative fighters of the evening were given post-fight bonuses for their performances, tonight in the amount of $65,000.
Terrifying and often unpredictable Brazilian submission specialist Rousimar Palhares took home the Submission of the Night award for his rapid heel hook victory over Mike Massenzio. Palhares went right after Massenzio in their middleweight tilt, quickly pulling guard, snatching his leg and cranking the heel hook in rapid succession, eliciting the tap just over a minute into the first round.
Edson Barboza became the biggest winner of the night by earning himself two bonuses, one for Knockout of the Night and the other for his participation in Fight of the Night against Terry Etim.
Barboza and Etim battled back and forth for the majority of three rounds, with Barboza consistently holding a slight edge while Etim continued to press onward. Both men had their moments, but Barboza stole the show in the third round when he fired off a beautifully timed wheel kick that connected flush with the side of Etim’s face, instantly dropping him like a sniper’s shot. Barboza coolly walked away as a stiffened Etim crashed to the mat, having very likely scored the knockout of the year.
