Make no mistake, former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar is hunting to reclaim the belt. The first step on his way to that goal will be to defeat Alistair Overeem this Friday night at UFC 141, something he has full intention on carrying out.
“I’m knocking on the door to being the UFC heavyweight champion again. I’ve got this fight against Alistair, and this guy is not gonna stand in my way,” says the ex-pro wrestler. “There’s no way in hell I’m gonna let that happen.”
In Overeem, Lesnar will face a more experienced opponent who is best known for his striking arsenal, Lesnar’s biggest perceived weakness. He’ll also be returning from well over a year out of the cage and a second bout with diverticulitis, all of these factors conspiring to see Lesnar cast as the underdog.
None of that matters to Lesnar, though. He knows how he’s been performing in the gym, what he’s capable of, and he doesn’t think Overeem will have the right answers for what he’ll be bringing to the table on fight night.
“He’s very versatile on his feet. He’s got a long range, both with his hands and his legs. I don’t care how many fights he’s had and I don’t care where his career’s been, when the door shuts and it’s time to go, he’ll know really quickly that he’s got a fight on his hands,” he asserts. “In my mind, I think he’s in over his head. He doesn’t really understand the beast that he’s gonna enter the Octagon with. At the end of the day, it’s gonna come down to will and who wants this fight more, and at the end of the day, Brock Lesnar wants this fight more than Alistair Overeem.”
UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem goes down this Friday, December 30, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Don’t miss FightLine’s live, ongoing coverage of the event that night.
