UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem is set to take place next Friday, December 30, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will feature a heavyweight battle between former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar and former Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem.
Both fighters answered questions about their impending battle today on a media conference call, below are notes and quotes from the call.
-Overeem says that this week has been hectic, but that he’s kept his focus on training as much as he can.
-Overeem: Everyone has a right to ask questions, and I have a right to respond or not.
-Lesnar says he’s been dealing with the same accusations as Overeem for most of his life and that it comes with the territory when you live a public life.
-Lesnar: “I’ve been able to work on a lot of different things during my time off.” Says you have to stay on top of new techniques and continually learning to make it in MMA.
-“I don’t like to talk about my preparation. … I feel good, mentally and physically. … I’m sparring with wrestling guys and it’s going well, I’ll give you that,” Overeem said.
-“You can take the boy out of the country but can’t take the country out of the boy. (Being at a live UFC) fight felt good. It was a good atmosphere. There was a lot of electricity in the air.” – Lesnar
-“There was nothing easy about it,” said Lesnar on dealing with diverticulitis for a second time. “The first time, I’d never had any surgery or anything done, like the second time. … If you’re not healthy, you don’t have anything.”
-Lesnar: “Alls I can say is I’ve had a great camp and this is the best I’ve felt in a long time.”
-Overeem on the fight: “I’m prepared for five rounds. … We’re aggressive. We’re not the type of guys who back up. We’re the type of guys who finish fights. … I don’t see it going past the first or second round.”
-Lesnar: “I feel the same. This is a heavyweight fight. We’re both going in there to finish the fight, I don’t foresee it going five rounds.”
-Lesnar isn’t paying attention to being cast as the underdog, just focused on the fight and becoming a better fighter.
-Lesnar hasn’t thought at all about fighting for the title yet, since he has to focus on Brock Lesnar right now. Overeem expresses a similar sentiment, but admits that he’s thought about how he matches up with dos Santos. Gives him a lot of credit as a fighter, but believes he matches up well with him and can trump him with experience.
-Both men talk about their hunger to claim the UFC belt.
