Following his unsuccessful bid for Gilbert Melendez’s Strikeforce lightweight title, many wondered what held Jorge Masvidal back from letting go of his hands more, as he almost exclusively threw his jab.
Well, Masvidal’s team has released a statement today regarding the fight which offers some insight in that regard (props to MMAWeekly).
“We attempted to seek additional treatment on his hand prior to the fight; however, were told by the commission it was too late,” said Ron Foster, part of Masvidal’s management team. “Masvidal was determined to push forward and he did. We are proud of his performance under the circumstances.”
For his own part, Masvidal wouldn’t make excuses, saying that Melendez beat him by virtue of being the better fighter on the night and that he only wishes for another opportunity to fight El Niño down the line.
“I should have listened to my corners and tried to take him down more,” said Masvidal. “At the end of the day Melendez won fair and square. He’s a great fighter and I have a lot of respect for him. I just hope I get the chance to fight him again.
“I want that belt and I will work my way back up until I’m given the opportunity at it again.”
