Antonio Rogerio Nogueira got back in the win column tonight by taking out fellow light heavyweight veteran Tito Ortiz in the first round of their UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida meeting.
True to form, Ortiz showed up to fight. The People’s Champ came at Nogueira like he owed him money, setting a high tempo immediately by getting in Nogueira’s face with punches and pushing the pace. Nogueira needed time to adjust, but when Ortiz closed the distance and started working dirty boxing, Lil Nog turned the tide.
Minotoro dug in and fired back with some hard punches that touched Ortiz and then walloped the former UFC light heavyweight champ with a left hand on the break. A follow-up knee to the body dropped Ortiz, signaling the beginning of the end for the 36-year-old. Displaying championship heart, Ortiz did his best to hang on through the torrent of blows that Lil Nog started to rain down, doing well enough until his opponent began to focus his attack on his body. Nogueira hammered Ortiz’s ribs repeatedly with heavy right hands, causing him to wince and the ref to stop the fight.
Lil Nog snapped a two-fight losing streak by taking out Ortiz and improved his record to 20-5.
Ortiz was groaning in pain well after the fight was stopped, having weathered an tremendous assault to his body. The People’s Champ has gone 1-6-1 over his last eight and asked only to be allowed to fill out the final fight on his contract before his retirement.
UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida went down from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
