UFC 140: Mitch Clarke Vs. John Cholish

The first fight of the night takes place in the lightweight division and will be overseen by Big John McCarthy.

Round 1: They touch gloves and get after it, Cholish landing a pair efore shooting for the takedown. Clarke defends against that one and another, threatening briefly with the guillotine. Cholish is picking his shots and landing some solid single shots. Cholish goes for a foot trip and they end up scrambling, with Clarke briefly taking Cholish’s back while standing. Cholish defends well and ends up getting Clarke to the mat by rolling for a kneebar. Cholish eventually lets Clarke to his feet, where they settle back into a fairly even and uneventful striking exchange. Clarke’s punches are telegraphed and continually coming up short, Cholish is avoiding them and countering occasionally.

Round 2: Clarke coming out with a little more zip on his punches, but Cholish is still holding the edge standing up. Cholish shoots for the takedown, which Clarke defends and answers with some solid knees. Cholish lands a nice right hook and then a leg kick. Another. Cholish lands the right hand again, twice in a row. Cholish tags Clarke with a straight right, seemingly having found a hole in Clarke’s defense. Cholish shoots deep and gets Clarke down against the fence. Clarke gets to his feet and looks to take Cholish down, but instead he gets his back taken when Cholish rolls for a kimura. Cholish is pounding away at a flattened Clarke, who can do little more than just take the punches. Big John has seen enough and calls it off.
