The UFC has made its first event on FX official, announcing today that lightweight fighters Jim Miller and Melvin Guillard will square off in Nashville to headline the FX-aired show.
“For our first live event on FX, we wanted to deliver an incredible fight for the fans and Melvin Guillard vs. Jim Miller should be a war,” said UFC president Dana White. “These are two of the top ranked lightweights in the UFC and both have a lot on the line as they want to get back in the title picture. Miller is known for relentless pressure. There is absolutely no quit in him. He has won Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night awards. Melvin Guillard is one of the most explosive athletes in the lightweight division. He has won the Knockout of the Night award twice. I expect more awards to be won in this fight.”
Melvin Guillard had put together five straight victories in the UFC to get his name in the title picture, but was tapped out by heavy underdog Joe Lauzon last month at UFC 136. Guillard took criticism for not taking Lauzon seriously enough and is looking to get back in win column in a big way.
“The fans in Nashville better be ready for fireworks when me and Miller go at it,” Guillard said. “I see Fight of the Year written all over this one. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and I know how phenomenal he is inside the Octagon, but I’ve wanted this fight for a while and I’ll be ready. This is a great opportunity for me and I’m honored to be a part of history in headlining the first ever UFC on FX event.”
After posting a seven-fight winning streak, Miller, too, was positioned as the division’s top contender. Before he could get his chance at the belt though, the New Jersey native was beaten by former WEC lightweight champ Benson Henderson at UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle this past August. Miller believes that he and Guillard are still two of the best 155ers in the sport and will produce a night of fireworks when they do battle.
“Melvin has proven that he’s a dangerous opponent, but he’s also proven that his weaknesses can cost him and his weaknesses are my strengths,” said Miller. “We’re going to show the fans in Nashville and the fans watching on FX why we were chosen to headline this event. You’ve got two of the best guys in the division in a fight that I highly doubt will go the distance. Don’t blink because this thing could end at any moment.”
UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller will take place on January 20 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
