Georges St-Pierre Expects To Face Jake Ellenberger Down The Line

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s divisional dominance is made all the more impressive by the caliber of competition he must continue to defeat in order to hold onto the belt.

Currently, the French-Canadian 170lbs. kingpin is on deck to face off against former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz, but there are plenty of fighters waiting in the wings for their shot at GSP. One man who has separated himself from the pack is 26-year-old Jake “The Juggernaut” Ellenberger, who’s gone 5-1 in the UFC, with his only loss a controversial split decision to fellow top contender Carlos Condit.

Ellenberger most recently appeared in action last September against Jake Shields, who had challenged St-Pierre for the title prior to facing Ellenberger, taking the champ the distance and giving him periodic trouble. Ellenberger did away with Shields within the first round of their fight, knocking him out with a torrent of strikes just fifty-three seconds into the fight. Speaking with Showdown Joe Ferraro recently, St-Pierre admitted that he’s got his eye on the surging Ellenberger and expects to face him somewhere down the line.

“I think Jake is a good fighter. Right now Nick Diaz is lined up first. Of course, I’m sure he’ll have his chance when the time comes, for sure. He’s a great fighter,” said GSP. “He’s always improving and one day, we’re probably gonna meet.”

Ellenberger is currently slated to face fellow welterweight standout Diego Sanchez in the main event of the recently scheduled UFC on FUEL TV 1. Check out the full video of St-Pierre’s interview below.
