Looks like ol’ Uncle Chael was right again.
Top middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has said since defeating Brian Stann that he believes he’ll be Anderson Silva’s next opponent, but that Silva won’t be his. The UFC middleweight champion is on the sidelines recovering from nagging bursitis in his shoulder and it looks like reports that The Spider could be out until June hold water.
Following UFC 139 last night in San Jose, UFC president Dana White confirmed to MMAWeekly that Silva will be out until early summer rehabbing the injury; he also hinted at the UFC 139 post-fight press conference that the champion may make his return on a June card in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
“How’s this stuff get out?! It’s crazy,” White said when asked if rumors of Silva on a June Sao Paulo card were true. “I don’t know. Might be. What happens is you guys get all this sneaky information and then I say stuff at the press conference and my whole crew goes, ‘What are you doing?! We didn’t say anything yet!’ I don’t know if we’re going to Sao Paulo in June and if Anderson Silva’s headlining the card. That would be awesome though.”
White also slyly indicated that Sonnen could fight again in the main event of the impending UFC on Fox 2 fight card against an as-yet-unnamed opponent.
