Against all odds, Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva got back in the win column tonight in dramatic fashion, taking out Cung Le in the co-main event of UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson.
Silva was far more measured in this bout than he was in his last fight against Leben, controlling himself and picking his shots even when he got Le hurt. He didn’t have an easy fight in front of him either, as Le continually clipped him with his varied kicks and punches, most notably with a spinning back fist.
In a moment that no doubt stiffened the legion of Wanderlei Silva fans, The Axe Murderer’s knees buckled after eating a hard spinning back fist. Despite Le’s continual assault, Silva kept pressing forward and repeatedly tagged Le and hurt him with hard punches. The 35-year-old showed flashes of his Pride form, throwing mean head kicks and absolutely vicious knees that damaged Le badly.
After eating one of those vintage-form knees, Le dropped to the mat, looking for the takedown. Silva hipped out of it and smashed him with hammerfists and the referee stepped in to call it. Though the finish may have been signaled a bit early, Silva had very clearly put Le on dire straits and it didn’t look like he would be recovering anytime soon.
In victory, Silva prolongs his UFC career and rebounds from a knockout loss to Chris Leben that had many calling for the Brazilian legend to hang up his gloves.
Le fails in his UFC debut, but not without putting on a valiant effort; his MMA record now stands at 7-2.
UFC 139 went down at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
