Until this past weekend when Cain Velasquez met Junior dos Santos in the cage, Cheick Kongo had come closest to giving the relentless former champion a run for his money. Where Kongo only tested Velasquez’s ability to take a punch, dos Santos found his limits, knocking him out in the first round of their UFC on Fox 1 title fight to inherit the belt.
However, in a recent interview with FightHubTV, Kongo revealed something that indicated his initial fight with Velasquez could have played out differently, maybe more like his bout with dos Santos.
“I wasn’t in shape. I fought him with bad injuries on my knee,” said Kongo. “And the thing I can say today is, I’m healed. So, I can make the fight totally and completely in shape.”
With Kongo on a two-fight winning streak, having taken out Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione, and Velasquez coming off of a loss, a rematch between the two isn’t out of the question.
