New UFC Champ Junior Dos Santos Fought With Torn Knee Ligament

Junior dos Santos knocked out UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez Saturday night in the main event of UFC on FOX 1: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos on one good leg. The new UFC champ disclosed during the post-fight press conference that he tore his meniscus 10 days before the fight, and was even on crutches for two days.

“I got a very serious injury in my knee, my meniscus,” said dos Santos (thanks to for transcribing). “You know, 10 days ago I couldn’t walk very well. I stayed two days with (crutches), but I asked my doctor to help me because it’s the fight of my life and I can’t miss that fight.”

Dos Santos landed a heavy strike to the head of Velasquez and finished him off on the ground with a series of blows in the first round. “Cigano” awaits his next opponent, which will be decided when Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem square off at UFC 141 in December.
