Junior dos Santos knocked out UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez Saturday night in the main event of UFC on FOX 1: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos on one good leg. The new UFC champ disclosed during the post-fight press conference that he tore his meniscus 10 days before the fight, and was even on crutches for two days.
“I got a very serious injury in my knee, my meniscus,” said dos Santos (thanks to MMAFighting.com for transcribing). “You know, 10 days ago I couldn’t walk very well. I stayed two days with (crutches), but I asked my doctor to help me because it’s the fight of my life and I can’t miss that fight.”
Dos Santos landed a heavy strike to the head of Velasquez and finished him off on the ground with a series of blows in the first round. “Cigano” awaits his next opponent, which will be decided when Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem square off at UFC 141 in December.
