It wasn’t pretty, but former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia did enough last night to take home a unanimous decision over Pedro Rizzo’s replacement, Andreas Kraniotakes, in the main event of ProElite 2: Big Guns. In his return to heavyweight from super heavyweight, Sylvia essentially stalled his way to a win, pressing the less experienced Kraniotakes into the fence and holding him there for most of the fight. The win makes it two in a row for Sylvia, who’s gone 6-3 since leaving the UFC in 2008.
Another former UFC heavyweight champion picked up a mostly uninspired victory last night as well, as Andrei Arlovski starched journeyman Travis Fulton with what was quite literally a last-second head kick. The majority of the bout was as ho-hum as Sylvia-Kraniotakes, with both men keeping a measured pace and looking uninterested in taking many risks or really trying to take victory emphatically. Arlovski looked to be on his way to a boo-drawing victory, but managed to uncork a head kick at the 4:59 mark that knocked Fulton out cold.
Reagan Penn capped off a rough few weeks for the Penn clan, as he was unable to secure victory in his second professional fight. Displaying the same pitfall that his brother BJ often has, Reagan came out looking strong but faded as his opponent continued to pressure him. Despite taking a lopsided beating, Reagan was able to make it to the final round, picking up an emphatic unanimous decision loss against Evan Cutts.
