Mark Muñoz made it four in a row tonight by flattening battle-tested middleweight staple Chris “The Crippler” Leben in the main event of UFC 138.
Of course, Leben didn’t make it easy for Muñoz, staying in his face and swinging hard punches all night; The Crippler even surprised in the early goings by taking down the accomplished wrestler twice himself. In the end, Muñoz just seemed to be faster than Leben and just as powerful, if not more so.
The 33-year-old handled himself well on the feet against the Leben, but did his best work after taking Leben to the mat, where he would batter him with downright fearsome ground and pound. After enduring a second round mostly trapped under Muñoz and his burdensome assault, Leben walked back to his corner with a mutilated left eye that impaired his vision completely, prompting his corner to call a halt to the fight.
Muñoz improved his record to 12-2 in victory and is now riding a four-fight winning streak. Following his victory, Muñoz called out his occasional training partner, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
“I paid my dues in this weight class and I think I deserve a title shot,” Munoz said. “Anderson Silva is by far the best pound-for-pound fighter. I give him all the respect and honor, but I think I deserve a title shot right now. I consider him a friend, but right now I’d love to get a title shot.”
Leben now stands at 22-8 and has gone 1-2 in his last three. UFC 138 went down from the LG Arena in Birmingham, England.
