Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney confirmed while a guest on MMAWeekly Radio this week that his fight promotion is looking to schedule a lightweight match between Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki for February.
Alvarez’ lone loss since 2008 came at the hands of Aoki via submission in Japan. He is the current Bellator lightweight champion, and does have a title defense against Michael Chandler planned for November 19 at Bellator 58.
“Eddie and I have been talking about that fight now for the last two years. Ever since Eddie got submitted over in Japan, Ed’s been calling me saying, ‘How can we make it?’ Now we finally got it done,” Rebney said. “Ed has got his hands full against Mike Chandler. Ed’s completely focused (on Chandler).”
Rebney did say that a loss to Chandler could change the Alvarez-Aoki fight. Aoki is the current Dream lightweight champion and has not lost since a decision defeat to Gilbert Melendez last year.
