Though this weekend’s UFC 138: Leben vs. Muñoz fight card has been met with a tepid reaction by many, the fight-starved fans in England are apparently all over the event, as UFC UK vice president Marshall Zelaznik revealed at today’s pre-fight press conference (props to MMAJunkie.com) that the event is setting arena records and is close to selling out.
“We are within a couple hundred seats of a total sellout,” Zelaznik said. “I spoke with the arena executives yesterday, and they’ve assured me that we’ve already set the revenue record for the arena, so we’re really proud of that and thank you for all the fan support.”
Zelaznik attributed the event’s success to the rabid MMA fanbase that exists all over the UK.
“Our feeling is – and I think it’s been proven – that England is one of the best fight countries in the world,” Zelaznik said. “The fans here continue to support us.”
The fight will take place at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England and will be the only UFC event to take place in the UK this year, likely as a result of fan outcry over the UFC’s long absence from UK soil.
