UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz went down tonight from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and, though there were a few plodding decisions and two of MMA’s most beloved figures announced their retirements, the card did offer some exciting moments that will live on and the fighters who made them happen were compensated for their efforts.
Fight night bonuses were handed out to the superlative fighters of the evening, in the amount of $75,000.
Fight of the Night goes out to main event fighters BJ Penn and Nick Diaz, who put on a back-and-forth barnburner in the welterweight division that saw Nick Diaz strongly announce his presence back in the UFC with a sound unanimous decision victory over Penn. Following the bout, Penn announced his retirement from the sport, ending one of MMA’s most storied careers.
Submission of the Night honors were given to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who picked up yet another impressive win for the WEC crew, making it six in a row after beating down and then choking out German fighter Dennis Siver. Expect for Cerrone’s name to deservedly litter title talks from here on out.
Finally, Knockout of the Night was earned by Bart Palaszewski who starched longtime UFC competitor Tyson Griffin in his promotional debut, bouncing back from a WEC defeat to Kamal Shalorus and taking home over seventy large in the process. Not a bad first outing for the Polish-American veteran.
