UFC 137: Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic Vs. Roy Nelson

A new, svelte Big Country switches it up and walks out to “Born in the USA” by The Boss, of course. Nelson looks to be in the best shape of his career. Duran Duran’s “Wild Boys” hits the speakers when Cro Cop walks out for what could be his last fight ever. Steve Mazzagatti will ref the night’s first heavyweight fight.

Round 1: THey touch gloves and take to the center of the cage. Nelson whiffs on a big right hand. Cro Cop circling away, Nelson keeping his hands up high. Nelson drives for the takedown and gets it, Cro Cop establishes guard. Nelson trying to put his weight on Cro Cop, he lands a good elbow. Nelon holding his forearm across Cro Cop’s neck and throwing punches. Cro Cop keeping his guard closed and defending mostly. He makes space and springs to his feet, where he lands a good left hand that immediately swells Nelson. Cro Cop lands a hard kick and follow-up left hand. Nelson lands a big overhand right and Cro Cop come right back with a hard uppercut. Cro Cop closes the distance and lands a hard uppercut. Cro Cop’s striking looking sharper than it has in a long time. He land a good right. Nelson is charging at him now, loading up on the right himself. Cro Cop keeping him at bay with a straight left. Cro Cop with a kick to the body.

Round 2: Nelson comes out with the right hand, which Cro Cop avoids. Nelson lands a hard right, but it just pisses Cro Cop off. Cro Cop swarms Nelson with a ridiculous amount of hard punches, forcing him to turtle up against the cage. It’s amazing that Nelson is still standing after that. Cro Cop is tiring, but he’s still throwing hard. Cro Cop with a one-twoNelson misses on a big right. Cro Cop throws the left high kick; Nelson gets his hand up but it smacked hard. Nelson closes the distance and they battle against the fence, Cro Cop defending the takedown so far. Nelson gets him down with two minutes left and moves into side control quickly. This is a bad spot for Cro Cop. A minute and a half to go and Nelson is moving higher up toward Cro Cop’s head, it looks like he’s trying to set up the crucifix, but Cro Cop is defending well. Nelson traps the arm with forty seconds left. He starts peppering Cro Cop with right hands, Cro Cop is bucking hard. Nelson dropping elbows as the round closes, Cro Cop survives.

Round 3: They touch gloves for the last round, both men moving a little slower and showing wear on their faces. Nelson with a body kick. Nelson stalking Cro Cop, who’s constantly circling back to the left. Nelson cracks him with a right hand that backs him onto the fence. Nelson walking him down. Nelson threatens with the takedown and then tags Cro Cop with a straight left, which causes him to fall to the mat. He takes Cro Cop’s back and pounds on him until Mazzagatti has to stop it.

“Everybody give it up for Cro Cop. He’s given MMA as a fighter, as a fan, so much,” says Nelson. Nelson calls out the champ, “I’m getting too old for this sh**.”

The crowd cheers loudly when Cro Cop takes the mic. Cro Cop confirms that this is his last fight. He says he wanted to say goodbye with victory, thanks the fans and the UFC for being treated like a king.
