The UFC started talking about going back to Brazil before they even left the country following the immensely successful UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami fight card late this past summer and now the promotion has settled on a date.
MMAJunkie.com reports that the UFC will head back to Rio de Janeiro on January 14, 2012, with what will likely fall in line as UFC 142. The event is expected to take place at the HSBC Arena, the same venue that the UFC used for UFC 134.
There have been no bouts rumored for the fight card as of yet, but expect the promotion to pack the card full of Brazilian talent, as the did with UFC 134.
UFC president Dana White had said following UFC 134 that the promotion had plans to return to the country frequently in order to further cultivate what is clearly a huge and lucrative market for mixed martial arts.
Also this week, the UFC announced plans to film a Brazilian version of the popular reality TV series The Ultimate Fighter. No word yet on whether or not that show will have anything to do with the UFC’s rumored deal with Brazilian television giant Globo.
This will mark the third time that the promotion has taken their show to Brazil, their first trip to the country taking place in 1997 with UFC 17.5.
