MMAJunkie.com reports that UFC 137 headliner Nick Diaz has passed his pre-fight drug test for drugs of abuse and is cleared to meet BJ Penn on Saturday night.
Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer came through with the test results for MMAJunkie.com, which did not include screening performance enhancing drugs.
For those of you not up to date on your MMA history, this is significant because, along with showing up for press conferences, Nick Diaz cannot always be counted on to pass a drug test. Kizer explained that any fighters who have failed previous drug tests – which Diaz has – must be tested and pass to be re-licensed in Nevada.
Back in 2007 at Pride 33 in Las Vegas, Diaz faced the man who was then considered to be the world’s top lightweight, Takanori Gomi in an absolute barnburner of a fight. The two went back and forth over two rounds, both men sustaining an inordinate amount of damage during that time. Eventually, Diaz submitted Gomi with a rarely-seen Gogoplata, securing the biggest and most impressive victory of his career. Unfortunately for the Stockton bruiser, the victory was overturned when his pre-fight drug test returned massive amounts of marijuana.
Diaz will face Penn this weekend in the main event of UFC 137, which goes down at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. FightLine will be back on fight night with our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
