For good or ill, BJ Penn has appeared pretty mellow in the days leading up to his UFC 137 main event fight against Nick Diaz.
Given his mercurial nature, Penn always draws the media’s scrutiny on fight week, with everyone speculating over where his head is at and “which BJ Penn will show up on fight night.” Regardless of The Prodigy’s relaxed demeanor, he said today that he feels he is under pressure going into this fight, if for no other reason than because he knows he needs to generate some forward momentum to remain a top contender in the UFC.
“I’m relaxed, I’m comfortable with the situation but I think me and Nick both have a lot of pressure,” asserted Penn. “Nick’s got some pressure to come in – he was gonna fight for the title, things got switched up. I kinda look at it like we’re both in a must-win position. My pressure comes from, I love to do this, I love to do mixed martial arts, I love to fight for the UFC and I want to continue doing that for a few more years. Nick’s here to prove himself, that he’s here to stay and that he’s a title contender. I think we’ve both got a lot of pressure on us come Saturday night.”
Through the rollercoaster of events leading up to UFC 137, BJ Penn finds himself facing occasional training partner and friend Nick Diaz in Saturday night’s main event. The two will meet at the Mandalay Bay Events Center this Saturday night, October 29, in Las Vegas, Nevada. FightLine will be back on the night with our live, ongoing coverage of the event.
