Matt Mitrione Plans To Use Cheick Kongo’s Chin To Pay His Bills

Matt Mitrione has only one objective when he enters the cage this Saturday at UFC 137 to meet Cheick Kongo: test his chin.

“Meathead” has won his first five professional fights since appearing on The Ultimate Fighter, including a second round knockout of Christian Morecraft earlier this year. That followed up a KO over Tim Hague. He hopes to add a victory over Kongo to his growing resume.

“Cheick is a real talent, he’s got tremendous resiliency,” said Mitrione, in an interview with Fighters Only Magazine. “He’s a damn good dude too, very cordial. But I’m going to try and pay my bills off his chin and I expect him to do the same.”

Four of Mitrione’s five wins have come via knockout, while Kongo owns 11 career KO victories. In his last bout, Kongo stunned Mitrione’s close friend, Pat Barry, with a comeback knockout in a wild first round.

As a former NFL player, Mitrione developed a strong sense of training and preparing, as evident by the countless hours of video studying that he does.

“The NFL taught me how to prepare, perform well and be objective about my performance,” Mitrione said. “In my last fight, I’d say I was about a three-and-a-half out of 10. By the time I fight Kongo, I’ll know what time he takes an afternoon nap.

“I’m gonna be pretty dangerous soon and you’re not going to want to stand or go to the ground with me. The only option will be to jump out the cage and get suspended by the commission, and I really believe that will happen some day.”

UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz takes place this Saturday, October 29, 2011 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. As always, will be providing live round-by-round coverage of the event.
