With Nick Diaz quite possibly being the last reigning Strikeforce welterweight champion, his title could linearly be on the line in his upcoming UFC 137 main event scrap against BJ Penn.
That’s cool and all, but it doesn’t really mean anything to Diaz, who’s just focusing on his fight. If you ask him, it sounds like he’s never put much stock in holding that belt in the first place.
“I haven’t really though about anything. I’m just fighting,” says the Stockton bruiser. “I’m not trying to get all crazy, I need to get paid. I’m gonna show up and make weight. Then I’m gonna fight. I don’t really think about all that. … I could give a sh**. I never put that belt on anyways, he can have the belt.”
When asked how he thinks the fight will play out against his similarly-styled opponent, Diaz almost scoffs: this is a fight and there’s no use in trying to predict what will happen beforehand.
“It’s a fight, man,” Diaz points out. “You know what I mean? That’s not really what matters. … I think this fight can go everywhere. Anything can happen, it’s MMA.”
UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz goes down on October 29 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Don’t forget to check back on FightLine for our live, ongoing coverage of the event that night.
