The words “roller coaster” have been used frequently over the last couple of days to describe the UFC 137 fight card and, more specifically, Carlos Condit’s place on it.
The Natural Born Killer originally expected to face BJ Penn on the card, but was promoted to the main event to take on UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre when Nick Diaz was booted from that fight for skipping out on media obligations. Now, just over a week before the fight, Condit has learned that St-Pierre has been forced off of the card with an injured knee and that he’ll have to take to the sidelines while the champion recovers.
Condit spoke with FOX Sports shortly after learning of this newest change of plans, explaining that, while he is obviously upset, his restlessness to face the champ will be abated by the fact that he is keeping his spot as the top contender while St-Pierre embarks on what is forecast to be a fairly quick recovery.
“I was ready to fight and I’m disappointed that I’m not going to be fighting next weekend. But, taking another fight when I have this opportunity to fight for the title, and taking another fight in between now and when Georges is healthy just doesn’t make any sense on a lot of different levels,” Condit asserted. “At this point, I’m just going to have to be patient.”
