Gilbert Melendez is widely considered to be a top three lightweight and definitely the best 155-pounder outside of the UFC. After he faces Jorge Masvidal this December in defense of his Strikeforce title, Melendez will very likely be making the move to the UFC, where he’ll test his skills against that division’s best. Provided he do well in that scenario and with the understanding that there is plenty of work for him to do at lightweight, Melendez is interested cementing his legacy as one of the best ever by playing his cards a division north.
“If things go well here then maybe I’ll go to 170, you know? Why not? I can fight 170-pounders, I think I can beat some guys out there,” Melendez recently told MMAWeekly.com. “But, definitely plenty of challenges at 155s right now, but you know why not a goal in the long term to be one of the best in the world and go to three weight classes? Why not? I’m not trying to be arrogant; it’s just that it’s a dream. I’m allowed to dream a little bit and I’m allowed to work for it. So, that’s what I mean by that.”
Melendez is scheduled to meet Jorge Masvidal on December 17 at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal, at the Valley View Casino in San Diego, California.
