Wanderlei Silva was a replacement for Vitor Belfort to meet Cung Le. For “The Axe Murderer,” this was a fight he couldn’t turn down, as he hopes to recover from a devastating knockout loss to Chris Leben when the two meet at UFC 139.
UFC 139 takes place November 19 from San Jose, California and features a main event pitting Dan Henderson against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Silva-Le will serve as the co-main event for the pay-per-view card.
Silva’s trainer, Rafael Cordeiro of King’s MMA, believes his fighter will be able to handle Le’s style and execute the plan to precision when the two meet inside the Octagon.
“We know what to do to match his game. This is a great match for Wanderlei,” said Cordeiro. “This fight won’t pass blank. Cung Le is going to sleep in this one. In the best way, with brutality. We are all united for this, and Cung Le will pay the price.”
It’s been a rough transition to the UFC for Silva since he joined the company in 2007. He lost to Chuck Liddell in a war that was hailed as Fight of the Year by many, and is just 2-6 since 2006, including knockout losses to Leben, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Dan Henderson and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic.
