UFC 136: Aaron Simpson Vs. Eric Schafer

Round 1: They touch gloves to start the night’s second middleweight contest. Simpson drops Schafer early with a series of right hands. Simpson lets Schafer up, but this does not bode well for Red. Simpson is taking his time with an already-bloodied Schafer. Simpson bulls Schafer into the fence, landing some hard shots from the clinch. They break and take to the center. Simpson pecking away, landing well to the body and flurrying hooks when Schafer tries to close the distance. Simpson is completely outclassing Schafer on the feet so far and is showing little respect for Schafer’s skills. He lands a vicious sequence to the body when Schafer tries to close the distance again. Simpson lands another punch combination with heat on it. Schafer slaps a left hook across Simpson’s mug. Simpson lands another series of punches before the bell. scores the round 10-9 for Simpson

Round 2: Right away, Simpson uncorks a hard overhand right, then follows it up with another series of mean hooks. Simpson is staying technical with his assault, but he’s putting some real heat on his shots. Schafer lands another left hook, but Simpson comes back at him with a combination that opens up a big cut under his left eye. Schafer continues to move forward, but he gets clipped by a left hook when he does. Simpson comes close to overwhelming Schafer with a Wanderlei Silva-like barrage of punches, but Schafer rolls off the cage and keeps in the fight. Simpson is working the outside, while Schafer plods after him. Simpson lands a rocket-fueled straight right that puts Schafer on his heels. Simpson has slowed his assault some as the second round closes, allowing Schafer to get off with a quick knee. Simpson drops Schafer in the closing seconds with a vicious right hand, but doesn’t follow him to the ground, allowing him to survive the round. scores the round 10-9 for Simpson

Round 3: Joe Rogan describes Schafer as being “tough as nails,” and that’s about right – the guy has eaten some heavy punches tonight and kept on coming. Again Simpson sticks the right hand. Simpson goes to the midsection with a straight right. Schafer still trying to walk Simpson down, Simpson still working the outside and landing power shots. He sends home a straight right-left hook combination. Simpson’s output has diminished considerably, but Schafer still has no answer for him. Simpson with another right to the body-left hook to the head that stings Schafer. Thirty seconds to go, Simpson looks at the clock and appears content to ride out the round to a decision – though his corner yells at him to look for the finish. Simpson moves away on the outside until the bell. scores the round 10-9 for Simpson
