Gray Maynard has plenty on his mind right now, specifically his UFC lightweight title fight with Frankie Edgar on Saturday at UFC 136. That didn’t keep “The Bully” from picking a winner for a future Rashad Evans-Jon Jones bout for the UFC 205-pound title.
“Rashad Evans. For sure!” said Maynard, while a guest on Pro MMA Radio (thanks to MMA Mania for transcribing the interview). “Cause he’s gonna hit him and Jon Jones doesn’t like that. I saw him (Jones) fight a guy…it was after the (Stephan) Bonnar fight, I think. I forgot who it was. But, every time he hit Jones, he turned his back and ran. It was really an eye opener. I was like, ‘He’s got skills but, he doesn’t like to get hit.”
Jones has used his extended reach and quickness to avoid taking significant blows, forcing opponents to try and come inside his range where the current UFC light heavyweight champion can execute his game plan. Evans is the No. 1 contender and a former champion and training partner of “Bones.”
“You’ve got a long guy, then you’ve got a more explosive, powerful guy,” Evans said. “I’d say Rashad. You know, he can scramble, he has it all. Jon Jones, you know, he’s had ‘Rampage’ (Jackson), (Ryan) Bader and a couple different guys. He did a good job, but I don’t think he can beat my boy, Rashad.”
Edgar-Maynard meet for a third time this weekend in Houston at UFC 136. FightLine.com will have complete coverage of the event.
