UFC lightweight contender Gray Maynard will challenge champion Frankie Edgar for his title for the second time this Saturday night in the main event of UFC 136.
Training out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Maynard came within a moment’s grasp of actually capturing the title from Edgar; in the first round, The Bully pasted Edgar from one side of the cage to another, making it appear clear that we were about to witness a changing of the guard at 155lbs. Edgar showed the heart of a champion though in rallying between rounds to get back in the fight. The bout was ruled a draw when all was said and done and the two are now readying for their third go-round.
Though the two share a similar base style in wrestling, Edgar has found his success as a fighter through being fast and fluid, while Maynard’s approach is rooted in solidity and power. Just how much power was recently explored by Sports Science’s John Brenkus, who analyzed Maynard’s grip strength and punching power.
